Bury College
Combining college furniture with a coffee shop atmosphere for easier collaboration and engaging student recruitment
Bury College was looking for a supplier to complete the design and installation of its new student refectory and canteen space. Following a competitive tender process, Richardsons was chosen as the team for the job.
The brief
The Facilities Team at Bury College wanted to create a space for students to relax between lessons, enjoy something to eat and drink, and work together in an informal environment.
The college’s team wanted to model the space on an upmarket coffee shop that would feel comfortable and engaging for further education students, while remaining practical and easily maintained as a high-footfall area.
Our approach
Liaising closely with stakeholders across Bury College, our designers cherry-picked college furniture from a range of manufacturers to create a cohesive area that met all of the college’s needs.
We carefully selected a range of hardwearing materials that were both stylish and hardwearing to reflect the desired coffee shop feel without sacrificing quality and ease of maintenance.
Despite significant delays in the building works, we were able to act flexibly to deliver the refit on time and 25% below the college’s budget without compromising on form or function.
The result
Bury College has a new refectory and canteen area that promotes collaboration and comfort.

Comfortable social spaces
Low sofas and coffee tables create a space for students to relax and recharge between lessons.

Designated dining areas
Hard-wearing dining furniture and benches provide practical spaces to eat and socialise.

Collaboration stations
High stools and benches with integrated power sources allow students to work together in a relaxed environment.

Focused study zones
High-backed booths with sound-proofed barriers allow students to focus with minimal noise and visual distraction.
The impact
All spaces are well-used and enjoyed by Bury College’s students, and have played an active role in attracting new students to the campus.
Since completing this project, we have continued to work with Bury College to transform teaching spaces including classrooms and examination booths.
All education furniture supplied is durable, reconfigurable, and has an expected lifetime of at least 25 years.
